In September of 2011, I was 33 years old, 5’8″ and 225 pounds; I decided it was time to change.
What was the catalyst for said change? Suffice it to say that for the first time in my life I decided to “believe in me” and put myself first. Needless to say, this is and will be a lifetime of learning, growth and change. Over the past six months, there have been many ups and downs. It’s easy for people to look at the physical changes and fixate on them (60 pounds is a drastic change). However, the emotional changes are really what have spawned the creation of this blog. I’m not entirely sure why I’m writing this, but I know I’m supposed to write. Much like me, it’s far from perfect, but it’s a work in progress, and I’m learning to take things one day at a time.
I am a high school English teacher, and I have been teaching for eleven years. I live in the San Francisco bay area, and I have recently finished my first 50k. This spring, I will be spending more time cross training (in the pool and on the bike) and developing more of a base. I want to ensure the longevity of my running career.
I have recently signed up for the Santa Rosa marathon (at the end of August), which is a Boston qualifier… goal time: under 3:40. I am also planning to run the North Face Endurance challenge in September. I will spend the summer training for these two races. I hope to run a few 10ks and half marathons to help me prepare. It should be interesting training for a road race since I do the majority of my training on the trails, but I’m ready for a different challenge!
